BOULDER – Fitbit captures loads of personal fitness data based on 10 million users nationwide.

With so many people using Fitbit to track personal fitness nationwide, it’s only ‘fitting’ for Fitbit to analyze data and output results.

And they did. Based on Fitbit’s analysis of 2017 data, Fitbit users in Boulder ranked at the very top for most active minutes with an average of 21.8 minutes per day. Boulder was followed by New York, NY; Duluth, MN; Bellingham, WA; and Boston, PA, in the two through five slots for most active minutes.

Boulder also claimed the No. 4 spot for Overall Fittest City in America, a ranking based on average rates for duration of sleep, “reminders to move” goals met, daily steps, daily active minutes, and resting heart rate.

The top five overall fittest cities are:

  • No. 1 Duluth, MN
  • No. 2 Appleton, WI
  • No. 3 Eau Claire, WI
  • No. 4 Boulder, CO
  • No. 5 Bellingham, WA

With all that activity, it’s good to know that Boulder pulled No. 7 for hours slept. Top snoozing cities outranking Boulder include
Eau Claire, Duluth, Fargo, Spokane, Sioux Falls and Billings – in first through sixth place, respectively.

Denver Fitbitters got in on the action, too. The Mile High City is the No. 5 most active American city, ranking behind Boston, MA and Manchester, NH; Madison, WI; Portland-Auburn, ME; and Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN.

The nation’s top walkers live in Appleton, WI, which lead for the most steps of any city. Appleton walkers averaged 8,208 steps per day – just under the 10,000 or
five-mile goal.

Top five walking cities are:

  • No. 1 Appleton, WI
  • No. 2 Green Bay, WI
  • No. 3 Duluth, MN
  • No. 4 Eau Claire, WI
  • No. 5 Boston, MA

Overall, Fitbit wearers took over 45 trillion steps last year – enough to walk to Pluto and back almost 2.5 times. Fitbitters also generated over 160 billion total active minutes, the equivalent of living over 4,000 lifetimes, slept 41 billion hours.
Days of the year ranked, too:

  • Most Active Day: Dec. 31
  • Most Slept Hours: Jan.1
  • Most Runs Taken: May 16
  • Most Bike Rides Taken: July 4

Fitbit’s 2017 rankings are based analysis of one-year’s aggregated and anonymized average 2016 data from more than 10 million Fitbit users nationwide. Find the full report at blog.fitbit.com/fittest-cities-in-america.
