BOULDER – Colorado has over 300 days of sunshine a year, which makes adding an outdoor living space to your home one of the easiest ways to spend more time in nature. It’s also one of the easiest ways to increase your property value if and when you decide to sell. From porches to pergolas, there is a project for anyone who wants to be in the great outdoors as much as possible.

Patios

Patios are a versatile part of any home. They’re great for entertaining or relaxing, and they almost always offer a strong ROI. An added bonus is that a patio can be made of so many different environmentally-friendly materials. Consider creating an oasis with permeable pavers, an eco-friendly paver that encourages proper water drainage. You may also consider using recycled materials like Vast Composite Pavers, whose materials are recycled and help homes earn LEED credits.  The ROI of a patio can be anywhere from 100% to 500%, depending on cost to build. For example, you will see a higher return on your investment if you fix or finish an existing patio, rather than building a new one. Also, keep in mind that patios shouldn’t take up the entire yard. The larger your patio is, the lower the return.

Firepits

What better way is there to spend a cool evening than by cozying up next to a fire pit? By installing a fire pit in your backyard, you’re creating a natural gathering place. You won’t need to create a “pit” in your yard, however. There are myriads of design options that will add immediate interest to your space. To be more environmentally friendly, don’t burn wood. Instead, use natural gas, bioethanol, or other alternatives that have a lower impact on the air we breathe.

Pergolas

A pergola adds shade and space for more gardening in your yard, as well as an increase in your home’s value. The design of a pergola is great for plants that vine, so you can grow tomatoes and grapes to add both interest and produce! You can also do your part to help support pollinators by planting flora they can’t resist. A pergola with plants that attract pollinators is a great way to draw hummingbirds and butterflies to your house in the warmer months.

Outdoor kitchens

Currently, the best outdoor investment for increasing your home’s value is by adding an outdoor kitchen. An outdoor kitchen is a fantastic gathering place and excellent for those who like to be outside as much as possible. In fact, outdoor kitchens have an average ROI of 100-200%. However, it’s important to note that outdoor kitchens are most popular in temperate climates, so avoid adding one if you live high up in the mountains. Thankfully, Colorado’s weather is fairly mild all year long, so you’d probably be able to grill even in the winter months.

One of the biggest perks to living in Boulder is the beautiful nature that surrounds us. Building an outdoor living space is a great way to take advantage of the weather and scenery here while increasing your property value. No matter your taste, there’s a perfect outdoor living space for you.
