LOVELAND – It’s summer time! This means barbecues, parties, and summer vacations. With so much time spent away from your home, be sure to take steps to keep your home safe from burglars and other intruders. Here are some helpful home safety tips for summer.

Lock doors and windows
The safest neighborhoods are often the biggest targets. No matter where you live, be sure to lock your windows and doors, especially while you are away. Also avoid hiding keys in obvious places like under the doormat. Easily found keys are no different than unlocked doors!

Hold your mail
Mail ad package buildup is one of the many signs that burglars look for in homes to target. Consider having your mail held by the post office while you are away on vacation. This can be done quickly and easily on their website at holdmail.usps.com/holdmail. Many package delivery companies like UPS and Fedex also have online tools to delay delivery or re-route packages to alternate addresses.

Arrange for home maintenance
Other signs that make it obvious you are out of town is an overgrown lawn.  Contact a local lawncare company to schedule lawn mowing while you are away. It’s usually not very expensive and can go a long way to protect
your home.

Keep your plans private
Most people think of burglaries as a random crime, but culprits may be closer to you than you think. When you publicize your plans to be away for an extended period of time, word can quickly get around to your friends, acquaintances, and beyond. Avoid these dangers by keeping your plans more secretive until you return. This includes limited social media sharing.

Install a Security System
Security systems can provide great protection and some added peace of mind. Many options are available from door chimes to window sensors, motion sensors, and even indoor/outdoor cameras. Many modern systems also come with an app that give you visibility of your home at any time of day.

Stress free returns from vacation
There’s nothing worse than returning home to find your belongings strewn about and your valuables missing. It’s also stressful and expensive dealing with the aftermath of such an incident. By putting security measures in place to protect your home, you can vacation with less worry and return to a safe and secure home.
