When stateside, the Gathmans savor time outdoors. “My father was stationed in Colorado Springs during World War II when I was 10 years old,” Linda recalled. After John received his master’s degree, the couple transferred from the farmlands of Illinois to Longmont, where they raised their son. “We skied for years, but now we mainly walk. We’d like to get out to the mountains more,” Linda said. “In Illinois, once it’s fall and winter, the sun doesn’t shine,” John said. “The first October we moved here, we got a huge snowstorm, but of course, two days later it was gone. The climate here makes Colorado very nice.”
